I became interested in computer programming almost immediately after being introduced to the personal computer. It was 1987 and at that time, computers were only interesting if you knew how to program them.
By 2004 I was deep in the expanse of generative programming, exploring complex systems built up from simple elements. I enjoyed being surprised by my creations (www.levitated.net). I was crafting rule based drawing programs and put machines to work generating unique instances of these intricate worlds.
Unsatisfied with viewing my work on a computer screen, I began creating limited edition prints that I sold online (www.complexification.net) using my own custom software. It was difficult. I knew there had to be an easier way.
Fortunately at this same time I was approached by Rob Kalin in Brooklyn, NY. He wanted to build a marketplace for handmade goods. I joined him and Chris and Haim, and together worked hard to make Etsy the best handmade marketplace in the world. Starting the company was thrilling, like leaping off a cliff. We built our wings in the rarefied air of free fall.
Seven years later and now it is time to return to my artwork. Etsy has grown beyond my wildest dreams, and I leave it in the capable hands of some very talented individuals.
My goal is to use this shop as the nexus of my interests in computation, digital fabrication technologies, and artistic expression. I hope to keep both feet slightly off the ground and facing the future.
Thank you for your interest!
Most humbly,
jared
